Due to the economic situation in Peru, Peruvian workers are often displaced by volunteer workers for lack of funding. Many non-profit organizations discontinue hiring their regular workers because it costs less to use volunteers. To avoid this, the project discourages giving volunteers work that can be done by paid local people. The volunteers for this project are “support” staff and are here to help as well as to learn.
As a Spanish teacher in Cusco, Jesús noticed that, because so many tourists visited Cusco, there was a need for an English speaking work force. He and a few of his fellow Peruvians spoke English well, many of the choice jobs in Cusco were taken by foreign expatriates. Whilst working with his students from all over the world, he realised that almost everyone had the same wish to help the poor working children they saw on the streets. Thus his idea of beginning a Spanish school for tourists blossomed. It was to be a school where the profits from the language courses would fund a programme for a number of the poorest of Cusco’s young people.
